FT 8229 Congregational Revitalization – (online)
Michael G. Bausch
Date: July 8 to August 15, 2008
This course is based on the idea that with a little imagination, creativity, insight, innovation, and cultural awareness, church leaders can awaken and nurture a fresh vitality within their congregations. The course focuses on the interconnected relationships of pastoral leadership, congregational systems, and today’s unique communication situation. The new world of Internet-mediated text, music, images, video and virtual reality has helped shape a communication environment that affects the members of our congregations, and that also offers new possibilities for effective mission. Some readings will be devoted specifically to issues of diverse cultural perspectives, the perception of a “digital divide” between rich countries and poor countries, privileged communities and disadvantaged communities, and issues related to racial, ethnic, and/or gender diversity. The course is designed to map out the terrain of a diverse multicultural digital media world, while helping church leaders and congregations develop approaches for renewal that affirm core congregational values and purposes. Course materials will provide comparative models for understanding the unique conceptual environment shared by 21st century leaders and congregations, as they plan and provide meaningful worship, education, spiritual formation, and mission.
